Some motorcycle accidents are caused by head-on collisions

A significant number of accidents involving motorcycles occur when the drivers of other vehicles turn or pull out in front of riders. Some motorcycle accidents, however, are the result of head-on collisions caused by other drivers. Police who recently responded to an accident on Connecticut 81 say that is what happened.

On the day of the crash, a group of motorcyclists was traveling on Connecticut 81. As the group approached an intersection, an SUV coming from the opposite direction veered into the path of the group. Two of the riders were unable to avoid being struck head-on by the SUV. One was a 47-year-old woman and the other was a 46-year-old man.

The impact threw them off their motorcycles. Emergency crews called for two Life Star helicopters, but, by the time they arrived, they only needed one. The woman succumbed to her injuries before she could be transported to the hospital. The man, however, was airlifted to Hartford Hospital with life-threatening injuries. His current condition is not known.

A third rider was involved in a crash when he swerved to avoid the initial impact, but he only suffered minor injuries. The occupants of the SUV were uninjured, according to police. The Connecticut State Police Accident Unit is conducting the investigation, and information as to whether charges will be filed has not yet been released.

The injured rider and the family of the woman who died retain the right to file lawsuits against the party or parties deemed responsible for the crash. If a Connecticut court finds that the driver was negligent, an award of damages may be considered. In the aftermath of motorcycle accidents, a significant amount of financial damage can be sustained, and a financial judgment could provide some relief to the victims and their families.
