School bus vs. car accidents are a concern for parents

When Connecticut parents put their children on the school bus in the mornings, they trust that their children will get to school and back home safely. No one likes to think about school bus vs. car accidents, but the possibility may always be in the back of a parent's mind. Few things could be worse for a parent than receiving a call that their child was injured in such an accident.

The parents of three disabled students here in Connecticut received that call recently when the school bus they were on crashed into a tree. The driver of the bus told officials that he was forced to take evasive action when another vehicle was coming right at him at approximately 3:30 p.m. He reported that he swerved to the right, and that is when the bus hit the tree.

Area residents who heard the crash and a paramedic who happened upon the scene all rushed to help. All three of the students and the bus monitor suffered a variety of injuries. The bus driver was not injured. One student was taken to the hospital, treated and released, and another one will reportedly be released soon.

Local hospital personnel considered the third student's injuries serious enough that the child was transferred to Connecticut Children's Medical Center via helicopter. The bus monitor was also seriously injured. No further information on the conditions of the injured are currently available.

Officials are working to determine the veracity of the bus driver's statements. Even if there was another vehicle tangentially involved in the accident, the families of these young victims and the bus monitor may still file personal injury claims against all of the parties involved, including the bus driver and his employer. If it is established that the injuries caused to the victims were due to the negligence of another, awards of damages normally seen in car accidents may be ordered by the court.
