Tired drivers are at risk for causing car accidents

Most Connecticut residents have driven while they were tired at one time or another. Drivers who are severely fatigued run the risk of falling asleep behind the wheel. Numerous car accidents occur each year due to drivers who are unable to stay awake while they drive.

Police report that the driver involved in a recent head-on collision on Route 25 admitted that he must have fallen asleep behind the wheel. When he did, the vehicle strayed into the oncoming lane and collided with a tractor trailer transporting heating fuel. The wreckage was problematic for emergency responders.

Emergency personnel had to cut the driver and a passenger out of the car before they could be taken to the hospital. Both of them suffered serious injuries that were not considered to be life threatening. Their current conditions are not known.

Due to the nature of the truck's cargo, representatives from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called in to supervise the clean-up of the accident. Fortunately, The tanker was not compromised, and none of the heating fuel leaked onto the roadway or into the ground surrounding the scene. Police are still investigating the accident.

Other than the citation the driver already received, it is not known whether any additional charges will be filed. The injured passenger retains the right to file a personal injury claim against the driver. If a Connecticut court is satisfied that the driver's negligence caused the passenger's injuries, it may consider an award of damages typically seen in car accidents. Any monetary restitution received could defray the medical expenses and other damages incurred in the aftermath of the crash.
