U-turns can lead to motorcycle accidents

When attempting to make a U-turn at an intersection, Connecticut drivers need to be sure that they have enough time to complete the turn before oncoming traffic reaches them. Moreover, the driver making the U-turn needs to take an extra second or two to be sure that he or she is sure that the intersection is clear. Numerous motorcycle accidents occur because drivers making U-turns claim not to have seen the motorcycles.

This may have been the case in a recent accident involving a car and a motorcycle in Connecticut. The vehicles were heading in opposite directions toward the same intersection. Witnesses reported to police that the car initiated a U-turn, and the motorcycle crashed into the side of it.

The 26-year-old rider of the motorcycle survived the crash long enough to be taken to Midstate Medical Center in Meriden. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries a short time after he arrived at the hospital. The driver of the car, a 29-year-old woman, suffered injuries as well. At last report, she required surgery, and her condition was listed as guarded.

Investigators are still attempting to locate witnesses who may have additional information concerning the cause of the accident. Police spent several hours at the scene and continue to investigate the crash. Therefore, it is not yet known whether any charges will be filed against the surviving driver.

The family of the deceased motorcycle rider and the driver of the car could benefit from an understanding of their rights and responsibilities in connection with car versus motorcycle accidents, since both parties could be found responsible. It is possible that the court could assign a portion of the responsibility for the crash to each driver. As long as the percentage of liability does not exceed 51 percent for the party seeking damages, a monetary judgment reduced by any percentage of responsibility may be awarded.
