Victims of truck accidents often touched many lives

Fatal accidents in Connecticut often affect the lives of many people beyond the victims and the families involved. Victims of truck accidents often touched many lives -- some without even knowing it. Entire communities may mourn the loss of those whose lives were cut short by such tragedies.

The University of Connecticut is mourning right along with the families of two teenagers who were killed in a recent accident their car and an 18-wheeler. The crash occurred at approximately 4:11 p.m. on a Friday. The two victims and two others were heading south, approaching Route 66. At the same time, a semi-truck was traveling east on Route 66 approaching the same intersection.

As the car entered the intersection, the big rig slammed into the passenger's side of the vehicle. The force of the collision propelled both the car and the truck through the intersection and into a utility pole. A man and a woman, both UConn students, perished in the crash.

The car driver and the third passenger survived, but they suffered injuries that sent each of them to the hospital. The driver's injuries were serious, and he was later transferred to another hospital via helicopter for further treatment. The surviving passenger's injuries were characterized as minor.

While families, friends and the university community mourn, police are continuing to investigate the accident and have not released any further details regarding the crash. As is the case with other truck accidents, the families of the deceased passengers retain the right to file wrongful death claims against the party or parties whose negligence caused or contributed to the death of their loved ones. Whether the driver of the car has grounds for a personal injury claim against the truck driver likely depends upon a careful assessment of the gathered evidence once the official investigation is concluded.
