Hit-and-run car accidents often require more investigation

Connecticut crashes in which the driver of one of the vehicles flees the scene are more of a challenge for police to investigate since they do not have a complete picture of the scene. Fatal hit-and-run pedestrian vs. car accidents are often even more difficult to investigate because the only surviving witness is the driver of the car that fled the scene. Officers may need to remain at the scene for an extended period of time in an attempt to gather as much evidence as possible that could ultimately lead them to the car and driver involved.

Traffic was stopped and detoured for hours on the Wilbur Cross Parkway recently as troopers with the Connecticut State Police investigated the death of a pedestrian. Workers with the Department of Transportation who happened to be working on the highway found the body at approximately 8 a.m. on a recent Friday. The pedestrian's wounds indicated that a car struck the person.

Troopers spent nearly seven hours conducting their investigation at the scene. At last report, troopers had not yet even determined when the pedestrian was hit. It could take quite some time to locate the party or parties responsible for the victim's death.

While the family of the victim awaits answers, it will most likely be incurring expenses typically associated with fatal pedestrian vs. car accidents. Those expenses and other damages could present a significant financial burden to the family. Once the driver deemed responsible for the accident is located, the family may file a wrongful death claim in an attempt to receive restitution for those financial losses.
