Witnesses never forget some fatal car accidents

It is most likely not surprising to Connecticut readers that families who have lost loved ones in car wrecks never forget what happened and may even mark the anniversary of their family members' deaths. However, some readers may not realize that witnesses are affected by fatal car accidents, too. As such, they may take the time to recognize at least the first anniversary of the deaths they witnessed.

For instance, a group of people who work at a business in front of which a deadly hit-and-run occurred on Dec. 4, 2014 decided to erect a memorial on this Dec. 4 in honor of the woman who died in the crash they witnessed. The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. Reports indicate that the accident was precipitated by some other incident that led to road rage. As the 51-year-old woman and her 11-year-old son drove past the business, a white sport utility vehicle slammed into the vehicle occupied by the mother and son.

The impact shoved the car into a tree in front of the business. The mother died, but her son survived the crash with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. Witness statements, which were backed up by video from a nearby security camera, helped police identify the vehicle that caused the crash, whose driver had fled the scene that morning.

The then-corrections officer behind the wheel of the white SUV that morning was arrested about a month later and charged with manslaughter and other crimes. Once a driver believed to be responsible for a fatal crash is located, surviving family members could exercise the right to file civil actions for wrongful death. It was not reported whether the family in this tragedy did so. If negligence is proved in a civil lawsuit, damages consistent with those ordered by Connecticut courts in other car accidents may be awarded.
