Witnesses are often critical in hit-and-run car accidents

In many cases, it takes the diligence of police investigators to locate a vehicle and driver involved in a hit and run. Witnesses are often a critical component in finding the drivers responsible for these car accidents. For example, an anonymous caller and two witnesses recently helped police identify the woman who struck and killed a 22-year-old mother of two here in Connecticut.

Connecticut State Police often rely on 911 calls in car accidents

Obviously, troopers with the Connecticut State Police cannot be everywhere at once. Therefore, they rely on 911 calls to alert them to car accidents on the state's highways and interstates. Not only are they then able to respond to crashes, but they might also be able to get statements from callers who might have witnessed the wreck.

Good Samaritans can become victims of car accidents, too

When people either witness accidents or come upon them in the first minutes after they happen, many of them do what they can to help those involved. However, good Samaritans can also become the victims of car accidents themselves, even as they are trying to help someone else. This was the fate of one Connecticut man who recently stopped to assist another motorist.

Will family file wrongful death suit when at-fault driver found?

When a family loses a loved one in an accident due to the negligence of one or more other parties, surviving family members have the right to file a lawsuit seeking restitution for financial damages incurred. Under Connecticut law, certain damages may be sought in a wrongful death claim such as last medical expenses, loss of the income of the decedent and the costs of the funeral and burial. However, filing such claims typically requires knowing what party or parties are thought to be responsible, which might not be available for some time in hit-and-run crashes such as one that took place recently.
