A lack of sidewalks leads to many pedestrian vs. car accidents

There are many areas in Hartford and elsewhere in Connecticut where no sidewalks are available. This means that pedestrians are forced to walk as far off the road as possible in order to reach their destinations. This increases the potential for car accidents in which pedestrians are struck and suffer serious or fatal injuries.

It was on a stretch of Route 5 in Connecticut near a cemetery that does not have a sidewalk that an individual was walking. A school bus operated by Smyth Bus Inc. that was traveling the same route as the pedestrian came down the road. The bus struck the person, and he or she suffered fatal injuries.

Fortunately, the bus was empty at the time except for its driver. The company issued a statement providing its condolences to the family of the victim and reiterating that the company and its drivers continue to follow established safety regulations. Reports also indicate that the company is cooperating with officials in Enfield as they continue the investigation. No further information regarding the victim or the circumstances of the incident were released.

As the family of the victim deals with the death of its loved one and attends to the various details that go along with such a loss, the family members are most likely incurring significant monetary losses. Surviving family members retain the right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver, the bus company and anyone else who might share liability in the accident. If it is established that the victim's death was due to the negligence of another, the family could receive compensation for its loss, as so many other families have done in the aftermaths of car accidents.
