Deadly single car accidents present challenges to investigators

Witness statements are an important part of any investigation. First-hand accounts can either bolster or otherwise explain the physical evidence at crash scenes. Obtaining witness statements in deadly single car accidents is sometimes impossible, which presents a challenge to the Connecticut investigators who are attempting to figure out how an accident occurred.

This could be part of the challenge in a recent accident that took place early on a recent Friday morning. The vehicle in question was headed north on Interstate 91 at approximately 1:15 a.m. Somehow, the driver of the vehicle lost control, and it went off the roadway, slammed into a tree and then finally came to rest deeper in the woods along the highway.

During the crash, two of the vehicle's three occupants were ejected. The 26-year-old man and 24-year-old woman both suffered severe injuries. The man died at the scene.

The woman survived long enough to be transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The third occupant of the vehicle remained hospitalized in critical condition at last report. Amazingly, that 25-year-old man was able to get out of the vehicle on his own in the moments following the crash.

Reports did not specify who was driving at the time of the accident. Therefore, it is unclear whether the survivor was the driver or a passenger. Civil actions may be filed against the driver -- or the estate of the driver if deceased -- in an attempt to receive restitution for the damages incurred in the aftermath of the crash. If a Connecticut court rules that the driver was negligent, damages typically seen in car accidents could be awarded.
