Injuries suffered in truck accidents can cause disorientation

In the aftermath of an accident, there is no way to predict how the people involved will react. Depending on the circumstances and their injuries, they could cry, scream or become unruly. This can present a challenge for Connecticut's emergency personnel who respond to car and truck accidents. How first responders deal with these situations might not be helpful, and in some cases, could further injure a victim.

A tractor trailer and an SUV collided on Interstate 95 at approximately 1 a.m. on a recent Monday morning. The impact caused the SUV to roll down an embankment where it finally came to rest. The SUV driver was trapped inside.

When troopers with the Connecticut State Police and other emergency responders arrived at the scene, they began working to free the 37-year-old man. Once free, a trooper claims the man became combative, posing a danger to himself and others. The trooper then used his stun gun on the man, who suffered a serious head injury in the crash.

The victim was then taken to an area hospital where he died some time later. Officials have launched an inquiry into the trooper's use of the stun gun. An autopsy will determine whether it contributed to the man's death.

In the meantime, the victim's family retains the right to file a wrongful death claim against all of the parties who might have caused or contributed to his demise. This could include the truck driver, the truck driver's employer, the trooper and the state of Connecticut. If one or more parties are determined to have been somehow negligent and contributed to the man's death, the court might consider an award of damages seen in other car and truck accidents.
