Could more victims of hit-and-run car accidents survive?

It is not difficult for Connecticut residents to imagine that pedestrians often suffer more serious and fatal injuries when involved in accidents with motor vehicles. Therefore, it is imperative that pedestrians receive medical assistance as quickly as possible. Many people question whether more victims of hit-and-run car accidents could survive if they received aid right away.

For example, police in a Connecticut city recently received a 911 call regarding a woman that was found unresponsive lying in the street. Police and emergency medical personnel responded to the call at approximately 8:41 p.m. on a Wednesday evening. The woman was taken to a hospital in the area.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel at the Bridgeport hospital, the Shelton woman succumbed to her injuries. It was the second fatality in recent weeks, and the Shelton Police Department is looking for anyone who might have witnessed the accident, requesting they contact the Traffic Division. It might never be known whether the woman would have survived had the responsible driver had remained at the scene, called 911 and rendered any aid possible.

The victim's family might be able to get answers as to why the driver fled, however. Her surviving family members retain the right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver, and any other parties who might bear some fault in her death, once police locate him or her and the vehicle used in the crash. Establishing negligence through the use of appropriate evidence could result in the court considering the entry of a monetary judgment in favor of the woman's family. Any restitution could be used to defray the costs ordinarily associated with deadly car accidents.
