Investigations could take months to complete after car accidents

Connecticut law enforcement officials want to be sure that they are arresting the right person in the aftermath of a motor vehicle crash. Furthermore, prosecutors want to ensure that they are correctly charging that individual and are not leaving anything out. Therefore, it could take investigators months to gather the appropriate evidence before considering investigations into car accidents complete.

This could be the reason why an arrest warrant was only recently issued regarding a crash that occurred on April 30. On that date, police say that a 26-year-old woman was headed westbound on a city street. At some point, her vehicle veered into the oncoming lane of travel and slammed head on into a vehicle in the eastbound lane.

She and the passenger in the other vehicle suffered serious injuries. They were transported to the hospital for treatment. Sadly, the driver of the eastbound vehicle was not as lucky. He suffered catastrophic injuries in the impact and died.

During the investigation, the westbound driver's medical records were reviewed. It was determined that either alcohol and/or drugs impaired her when the accident occurred. This fact influenced the charges facing the woman, which include second-degree vehicular manslaughter and second-degree assault with a motor vehicle. She also faces charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and failure to drive right.

Evidence Connecticut prosecutors intend to present to the court -- along with any resulting conviction secured -- could also be offered in civil actions filed by the passenger in the eastbound vehicle and the family of its driver. Establishing that the woman's negligence led to the serious and/or fatal injuries suffered by the victims could result in an award of damages consistent with similar car accidents. Receiving the restitution specified in a monetary judgment could help relieve the financial burdens incurred in the aftermath of this tragic accident.
