Simple rear-end collisions can be deadly in motorcycle accidents

Every Connecticut driver is required to keep their focus on the road, and this can be especially important when following a motorcycle. Even a simple rear-end collision can be deadly. Due to the vulnerability of bikers, motorcycle accidents often result in more serious -- and even deadly -- injuries to riders because they do not enjoy the same protections as those in passenger vehicles.

Connecticut families who lose loved ones in motorcycle accidents might wonder whether their family member would have survived if the victim had been in a passenger car instead. One family might be asking this question in the aftermath of a collision that took the life of a 48-year-old woman. She was a passenger on a Harley Davidson when the crash took place on Interstate 91 at approximately 12:07 a.m. on a recent Monday morning.

As the motorcycle headed south on the roadway, it was struck from behind by a passenger car. The impact threw the woman off the bike and onto the shoulder. The driver, a 49-year-old man, survived the accident and was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were only described as serious. His current condition is unknown. The 26-year-old woman who was driving the car that struck the pair did not suffer any injuries, according to reports.

The woman could face criminal charges, however, when the investigation is concluded. Separately, the family of the deceased woman and the operator of the motorcycle could file civil actions against her, seeking damages often requested in motorcycle accidents. Proving that the woman's negligent actions caused or contributed to the the death of the victim and the injuries suffered by the biker could result in an award of monetary damages.
