Too many motorcycle accidents are caused by rider errors

Riding a motorcycle takes many skills, including balance. Maintaining control of these machines can sometimes be tricky even for those who have ridden for a long time. Too many motorcycle accidents in Connecticut and elsewhere are caused by rider errors, and considering the vulnerability of both the drivers and passengers, any injuries suffered could be severe or fatal.

Passengers rely on drivers to ensure their safety, but sometimes that trust is misplaced. For example, a 32-year-old woman entrusted her safety to a 31-year-old man riding a motorcycle on a recent Sunday. As they traveled down Route 8 at high speed, the rider lost control of the vehicle near exit 11 as he attempted to change lanes.

As the motorcycle went down, both the driver and passenger were thrown from the bike. When police arrived at the scene, they found both of them in the median. They were both taken to separate hospitals with unidentified injuries.

At last report, they were both considered to be in critical condition. Reports indicate that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. So far, there is no indication as to whether any citations will be issued or charges filed.

Regardless of whether officials take any action against the driver of the motorcycle, the passenger retains the right to file a personal injury claim when she is able. As if often the case in other motorcycle accidents, lengthy hospitalization and extended recovery periods result in expensive medical bills, lost wages and other damages -- that is, if the victim is able to fully recover at all. If negligence is established, a Connecticut court might consider entering a monetary judgment in the victim's favor.
