Witness statements are crucial in hit-and-run car accidents

Some crashes present mysteries to Connecticut law enforcement agencies. This is just one reason why witnesses are important to car accidents. If a hit-and-run crash occurs, witnesses can become crucial.

On April 17, a man was killed in an accident in which the driver believed to be responsible fled the scene. When initially questioned by police, the 17-year-old driver told them that he hit a deer that Sunday night at around 11 p.m. A witness, however, told police that he contacted the teenager to let him know that he had hit and killed a person.

The evidence at the scene might back up the statement of the witness. Vehicle debris left behind indicates that it was the same make and model as the one police found at the teenager's home, which appeared to have sustained heavy damage. The boy faces charges in connection with leaving the scene of the fatal crash.

Reports indicate that the teen had been out with friends and might have been using marijuana, according to another witness. Later that day, the vehicle he was driving and another vehicle -- which was occupied by at least one person known to him -- traveled alongside each other. When the two vehicles approached a yellow traffic light, the teen accelerated instead of slowing.

That is when his vehicle struck the victim. Reports indicate that the teen braked briefly and then sped away. Occupants of the other vehicle called 911.

This information, and any other information gathered through further investigation, could be used to establish that the teenager's negligent actions led to the death of the victim. If a Connecticut court rules in favor of the victim's surviving family members, an award of damages could be ordered on their behalf. Any restitution they receive could help with the unexpected expenses and other damages that invariably arise in the aftermath of serious car accidents.
