Failure to pay attention can cause motorcycle accidents

During the summer months, there tends to be more traffic on Connecticut roadways, which is all the more reason for drivers to pay careful attention. Being distracted behind the wheel could cause a driver to fail to see another vehicle in his or her path -- especially if it is a motorcycle. Sadly, this is how many motorcycle accidents occur.

Recently, a waste management truck was headed west on a city street. Coming from the opposite direction was a motorcycle with two people on it. When the garbage truck began to execute a left turn, the driver failed to see the motorcycle. The deadly crash ensued.

The motorcycle driver suffered severe injuries to which he succumbed at a hospital in the area. His passenger, a 41-year-old woman, survived the crash and was flown to a hospital. At least report, she remained in "grave" condition.

South Street in Bristol was closed for hours while police conducted their investigation at the scene. Thereafter, the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team with the Bristol Police Department took over the ongoing investigation. Witnesses to the accident, if any, are asked to contact the department. It is not yet known whether the CWPM Waste Management truck driver will face any charges in connection with the crash.

Even if criminal charges are not filed, the family of the deceased motorcyclist and his surviving passenger retain the right to file civil actions in a Connecticut court. Employers are responsible for the actions of their employees during the course of their work duties. Therefore, if the evidence proves that the driver of the dump truck was negligent, both he and his employer could be found liable for any damages typically sought in motorcycle accidents.
