Some drivers attempt to avoid responsibility in car accidents

Connecticut law requires drivers who are involved in crashes to remain at the scene. However, some drivers attempt to avoid responsibility for the car accidents they cause by fleeing the scene. In these cases, police will often ask the public for help in locating the person believed to be responsible.

For example, at approximately 12 p.m. on Sept. 14, a single-car accident occurred on Route 1 in a Connecticut city. When police arrived, they discovered that the driver had fled the scene on foot and left his passengers behind. One of the passengers, age 27, succumbed to fatal injuries suffered in the crash. The other occupant of the vehicle survived and was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The East Haven Police Department spent hours investigating the accident and attempting to locate the driver. Officials obtained a photograph of the individual who was reportedly driving the vehicle and is asking for the public's help in locating him. Other than this photograph, no further information about the driver was available. Once the man is located, he will most likely face criminal charges in connection with the crash.

Apart from any criminal charges that might be filed against him, the man could also face wrongful death and personal injury claims from the family of the deceased passenger and the surviving passenger. Similar to other civil actions resulting from car accidents, surviving family members and the other passenger could offer evidence that prosecutors intend to present to the court in a criminal case, along with any conviction secured, to establish liability in the civil actions. If the evidence shows that his negligence led to the serious and fatal injuries suffered by the other two occupants of the car, the court may consider damage awards.
