Impaired drivers can cause deadly car vs. truck accidents

Crashes involving drivers who are under the influence are some of the most preventable since all a driver typically has to do is not get behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs. Sadly, that does not stop many people here in Connecticut and across the country from doing so anyway. Numerous car vs. truck accidents that occur each year are caused by impaired drivers.

One of the most recent crashes that took place here in Connecticut involved a driver who is suspected of being impaired at the time it occurred. The car was traveling along Interstate 95 when it made contact with an 18-wheeler at approximately 6:55 p.m. The impact caused the tanker truck to slam into the guardrail and roll onto its side. By the time the truck came to rest, it had struck a light pole and a tree. It then caught on fire.

The 64-year-old man who was driving the truck did not survive the injuries he suffered in the crash. The 35-year-old driver of the car did not suffer any injuries and is believed to have been drunk. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Even though the family of the truck driver may receive workers' compensation benefits in connection with his death, they also have the right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver of the car. If the evidence shows that the driver's negligent or reckless actions caused or contributed to the truck driver's death, the court might consider an award of damages often seen in car vs. truck accidents. If the family receives restitution from such an award, it could help defray their financial losses incurred because of this tragedy.
