Officer injured in in multi-car collision in construction zone

The innate danger that those who choose to serve their communities put themselves in was brought into stark relief recently when a drunk driver injured a long-serving state police trooper and damaged several vehicles in an already complicated construction zone.

In what is actually the third recent local crash in a construction zone, a man driving a Jeep Wrangler, who later admitted to consuming alcohol, collided with a Department of Transportation truck parked on the side of the road before rear-ending the cruiser where the veteran officer was seated. Ultimately, the Wrangler came to rest on top of the cruiser, resulting in serious but non-life-threatening injuries to the officer, who was quickly transported to a nearby hospital. The driver was also hospitalized for mild injuries, and was placed in custody after failing a sobriety test.

Our state's Move Over law is designed specifically to curtail exactly these kinds of accidents, but still faces some hurdles to achieving its intended effects. Under the law, motorists who encounter emergency vehicles of any kind, even tow trucks, stationary on a shoulder are required to immediately reduce their speed to a safe speed below the posted speed limit. In addition to this, drivers in such a situation are required to move over one lane away from the stationary vehicles if they are in an adjacent lane, unless it is not possible to do so.

It seems like every week the news reminds us that many people are injured or killed simply because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time, even in places that should seem reasonable safe. If you have been involved in an accident, the help of an experienced an empathetic attorney can ensure that you keep your rights protected as you pursue fair compensation for your losses.
