Boating

Boating Accidents According to the Coast Guard's 1997 report, 8,000 boating accidents cause over 800 fatalities, nearly $29 million in property damage and 4,500 injuries yearly. If you have been injured, or your property damaged in a boating accident, you may be entitled to money for your injury and/or property damage, as well as for time missed from work, and pain and suffering.

Some important boating safety tips include:

    • Don't overload your boat (the maximum number of people your boat can hold is the length X width divided by 15).
    • Make sure each person on your boat is wearing a PFD (personal flotation device, or lifejacket)
    • Check the weather conditions before you go boating.
    • Be careful with your fuel supply- use 1/3 going out, 1/3 coming back, and keep 1/3 as a reserve.
    • If you're boating at night, make sure your boat is properly lighted.
    • Watch out for other boaters and cross-wakes.
    • Do not operate a boat if you have consumed alcohol.
